As many of you have read here, we’ve discussed “Underlying Movement” #2 titled “Global Shift”. It entails a shift away from America as the center for Christianity, as well as a shift away from Christianity as the unquestioned faith here. We’re losing our home-court advantage.
There is evidence of this shift everywhere. For example, my
daughter Andria and her husband live in an apartment complex on the west side of Indianapolis. Their two boys have befriended two Indian kids in the complex. This Indian family moved here a few years ago and are pursuing education and opportunity in the US. They are aggressively focused on education and success. We noticed this type of focus while in India last week as well. It’s sobering to ponder how our entitlement approach to education here in the US is putting us at risk economically. However, there are downsides to such an aggressive focus.
Andria shared this sobering exchange last week with one of the six year old Indian kids:
So today Amed (a six year old neighbor boy) says “I’m excited to move to Carmel…we’ll live by my friend “Moheit”, he’s the smartest. He is as smart as a sixth grader because he took tests.” I’m like “Oh my, that is impressive.” He says “some kids are smarter than adults.” I said, “oh you really think so” and he says “Moheit is the smartest, he’s smarter than God even.” I didn’t feel the need
to defend God to a six year old but mentioned that God was a bit more intelligent since he made Moheit. He said, “His parents made him, not God.” I said, “Of course, of course, but God made the whole world is what I meant.” At this point I’m just astounded at the conversation I’m having with a kid this age…very little respect, but he’s not even trying to be disrespectful…which I think is worse. He thought it was totally ok to talk like this. Then he looks at me and says “are you smarter than a sixth grader?” I said, “what do you think?” and he said, “some kids are smarter than adults” again.
This is a very different world we’re raising our kids and grandkids in. Therefore, our message and example needs to be clear and consistent.
