Willow Creek has been plenty beaten up over their research and Reveal publication. Yet, Pastor Bill Hybels and the Willow team have been so instrumental in rethinking how to reach the unchurched these past 20 years. As attendance in traditional denominations began to plummet in the 70′s, Bill and others began the search to find effective ways to connect with the emerging “Broadcast Age” brought on by the development of television. It was a new age that demanded fresh thinking, similar to Luther’s quest after the innovation of the printing press and the emergence of the “Print Age.” Like it or not, the seeker-sensitive model emerged.
As with most strengths, they become so easy to overuse. And when the are, they become a weakness. An ability to connect and attract the unchurched took on a life of its own at Willow, it seems. James Twitchell, in his new book Shopping for God, reports that outside Bill Hybels’ office hangs a poster that says: “What is our business? Who is our customer? What does the customer consider value?” With such a passion to connect, Bill and the team now recognize they over-focused on attracting people and unfortunately created a new creature – the spiritually shallow consumer.
Here’s a video parody that says it all:

I’ve really enjoyed your Willow Creek/Reveal thoughts. I applaud Bill Hybels for being so transparent, and in the process helping the entire church body evaluate their ministries. As you could predict I would say, so much of Christ’s work takes place in the community on a one to one basis. Helping churches get out of their own walls is going to be more and more important as the community feels lonelier and more isolated by the day.
Adored the parody, too. Isn’t that perfect?
Hey thanks for your insights. I really appreciate your partnership in learning!
I agree, I don’t think people are giving Bill maybe the credit he deserves. He wouldn’t have had to share any of it.
The third of my three “Relevant Ministry Responses” is this missional focus as you mentioned. I’m getting there
.
More to come!
